Salzburg Festival 2022: THE MAGIC FLUTE (Premiere Live)

Trailer

Synopsis

At the Salzburg Festival 2022, the scenically surprising “Magic Flute” celebrates its premiere in a newly rehearsed production from 2018 on July 30 in the “House for Mozart”. In the cinema, the live broadcast takes you into a fantastic dream world with Tareq Nazmi, Mauro Peter, Brenda Rae and Regula Mühlemann in the leading roles and Roland Koch as the grandfather who tells the story.

Mozart’s “Magic Flute” stands in the tradition of fairytale Singspiel: A spectacular chase of a prince and a monster is the starting point of the plot about a love story with a kidnapped princess, two fighting antagonists – the Queen of the Night and Sarastro -, “funny characters” like Papageno and Papagena, and last but not least, a magical set of instruments with a flute and glockenspiel. Depending on the viewing angle, the perspective on this dazzling work changes. Director Lydia Steier brought her opulent view of the masterpiece to the stage for the first time at the 2018 Salzburg Festival. For the new production four years later, Steier developed her concept further and adapted it to the new venue in the Haus für Mozart. In addition, most of the roles have been newly cast, and this year’s top-class actors include Regula Mühlemann (Pamina), Brenda Rae (Queen of the Night) and Tareq Nazmi (Sarastro). Mauro Peter sings the role of Tamino, which he sang in 2018. The Vienna Philharmonic can be heard in the orchestra pit. The musical direction will be taken over by the celebrated Joana Mallwitz, who was named Conductor of the Year by the magazine “Opernwelt” in 2019 and who was the first woman to conduct a scenic opera at the Salzburg Festival in 2020 with “Così fan tutte”.

The “Magic Flute” will be broadcast live on July 30, 2022 and accompanied by an exclusive supporting program in numerous cinemas in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
